H. L. Mencken: A Conservative for Our Times?
H. L. Mencken is famous for his pungent and still quoted views on politics and politicians. This panel co-sponsored by The Mencken Society (TMS) and the Mencken House (MH) explores the dimensions of Mencken’s views, their
conventional labeling as conservative, and how they might relate to contemporary political stances.
The panel consists of Darryl Hart, president of TMS and prolific author of
books on religion and society, including Damning Words: The Life and Religious Times of H. L. Mencken, and K. W. James Rochow, long-time Mencken aficionado and author of a political memoir in process that travels between the poles of conservatism and liberalism, Confessions of a Second Grade Liberal. Robert J. Brugger, former TMS president and retired American history editor at the Johns Hopkins University Press, will moderate.
The panel presentation will be held on Friday, September 9th at 4 p. m. EDT at the Mencken House, 1524 Hollins Street, Baltimore, MD.
