Baltimore Evening Sun (10 September 1913): 6.

THE FREE LANCE

The Hon. Donald R. Hooker, M. D., in the Maryland Suffrage News for August 30:

Of one thing we may be reasonably certain, and that is that the committee of the Baltimore city grand jury now investigating the subject will not report in favor of the segregation of vice. Probably there will be no report at all.

Let the genial doctor now take the radium medal for prophecy, as he already holds the cruller for mathematics.

A DAILY THOUGHT. Every man has freedom to do all that he wills, provided he infringes not the equal freedom of any other man.--Herbert Spencer. -

The Hon. William H. Anderson on his disastrous defeat in Montgomery county:

There was not a clear issue in that county.

Ye gods, what next! For two months the hon. gent, belabored the Lee candidates with all the divine ferocity of a Wegg, a Hooker or a Bonaparte, and yet there was not a clear issue! Turn to any number of the American Issue for August or September: you will find page after page filled with riotous abuse of the Hon. Blair Lee, the Hon. “Cy” Cummings and the Hon. Eugene N. Jones, M. D.–loud calls for their blood, accusations of deviltry, demands that the “moral element” put them to death in the primary. For example, on September 6:

No decent, honest Christian Democrat can ask the blessing of Almighty God upon a vote for Mr. Cummings.

For example, on August 6:

“Cy” Cummings is the man who actually introduced the amendment that finally killed the local option bill. * * * Now this traitor to Democratic principles and self-government is a candidate for the Legislature from Montgomery county.

Again, on the same day:

In view of Dr. Jones’ connection with Lee and Cummings, and the disreputable manner in which they helped procure the defeat of the local option bill, we should feel compelled to support even an unknown man of standing and character against Dr. Jones’ silence.

And so on, and so on. The American Issue for August 30, the last number but one before the primary, contained no less than nine whole pages of abuse of the Lee candidates–say, the equivalent of 12 columns in The Evening Sun. I quote a few of the headlines:

A FEW NUTS FOR DR. JONES, OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY, LEE CANDIDATE FOR SENATE, TO CRACK. ARE THEY ASHAMED OF CUMMINGS? DOES BLAIR LEE DENY THAT “BOB” CRAIN IS FOR HIM? LEE FORCES SCARED AND LOOSENING UP ON LOCAL OPTION. ASK LEE IF HE DOES NOT INTEND TO SUPPORT “BOB” CRAIN’S LOCAL OPTION BILL. THE “BILL” LAMAR-BLAIR LEE CO.–DOES THIS LOOK GOOD TO YOU? A SLICK SCHEME TO DESTROY THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY PROHIBITORY LAW. -

And yey, despite all this immeasured excoriation and all this eloquent appeal to “Christian sentiment” and the “moral element,” the whole Lee ticket went throuhh with a bang, and the satanic Mr. Cummings, running third, led the fourth man by more than 300 votes! But there was no clear issue, of course! And it was not clearly decided! Oh, no! -

The estiniable Hot Towel on the life and public services of the Hon. Goose Grease Altfeld, successful candidate for the LEgislature of the First District:

His success in life has been entirely due to his individual hard work and ambition.

Just praise of a worthy gentleman. Laugh at him as you will, it is still a noble achievement to be the world’s champion Græco-Roman and catch-as-catch-can cocoa-butterer and vaselinist at the age of 24. John D. Rockefeller is full of ague and rheumatism: a new Oil King dawns.

The Hon. E. C. Carrington on the pious efforts of a late ally:

The Hon. Charles J. Bonaparte, stumped Maine for the Progressive candidate and emptied the vials of his wrath upon the Republican party. The PRogressive vote shrunk 50 per cent. and the Republican vote increased 108 per cent.

Another triumph for “moral” influence. In exactly the same way the Hon. Mr. Bonaparte gave courage to the late grand jury by threatening it. Let him now exercise his benign art upon Dr. Goldsborough’s Vice Commission.

The hon. gent’s ex post facto excoriation of the grand jury, by the way, is booked for next Saturday. The foreman of The Evening Sun composing room, so I hear, is laying in a font of manganese steel type, with a melting point at 3,780° Fahrenheit. Too late, too late! The Hon. Mr. Bonaparte has been caught with the goods, and not all the blasts and bubblings of his eloquence will wipe out the harsh words on record in the clerk’s office of the Criminal Court of Baltimore city!

Effect of the vice crusade in Philadelphia, as described in a press dispatch:

Declaring that more young girls are being misled under the so-called “pure city” than ever in the history of tolerated tenderloins, Coroner Arthur Sellers yesterday demanded that the police act. He said that an organized gang maintains houses in the residential section to which young girls are lured.

The vice crusade was inaugurated in Philadelphia about a year ago, following a pious report by a vice commission and despite the protests of Director of Public Safety Porter. A so-called quarantine was established around the segregated district and the women who escaped were pursued like mad dogs. As a result, seven of them were driven to suicide. But was prostitution stamped out? By no means. Philadelphia is as bad today as ever it was in the good old days.

The Hon. Blair Lee concedes that there will be at least one vote against him in Govanstown and another one in Riverdale, Md., wherever that may be.
